THE BEST EXERCISE PERIOD.
I'm often asked, "What's the best exercise?"
The politically correct answer I usually give is "Depending on what your goal is will determine what exercises will be the most appropriate, efficient, and effective."
When I give this answer, most people will re-phrase their question to "What's the one exercise that you personally do? I want to know what you think is the best exercise."
When I pause and not reply immediately, they typically say, "Is it running? No, it's probably bad for my knees. Swimming is better. Right?" If I don't respond they will say, "I know there isn't one best exercise for everything."
For me personally, best exercise would provide incredible strength and conditioning as well as correct musculoskeletal dysfunctions to prevent injuries.
My pick for THE BEST EXERCISE is...
THE KETTLEBELL SWING.
